Appkettle - Turn on and off your device with Alexa

With Appkettle and Alexa, you can now control your Appkettle's 'on' and 'off' heating functionality through voice activation.

Let's get you started, please read the following:

[Appkettle guidance - start here]

https://www.myappkettle.com/alexa

To begin using this skill - please read the Appkettle skill setup page from the link above. This provides useful guidance and best practice for setting up the Appkettle skill with the Alexa App.

[Appkettle skill - quick setup]

(1) To use this skill you will need the latest iOS or Android Appkettle app - this will have a "Hi, Alexa" message and also the Appkettle skill icon on the App's login screen.

(2) To get started, please first login to your Appkettle account and choose a suitable device name under "settings" -> "My Account" -> "Alexa Devices", then select your device, change the name and select the save button. This device name will soon be linked with Alexa, so it is good practice to ensure you use a name that can be easily pronounced something like "Kettle" it is not recommended to use "Appkettle" as this is difficult for Alexa to understand (for other example good names see heading "Selecting a good Appkettle name" at https://www.myappkettle.com/alexa).

(3) Next select the "Enable Skill" button in the Alexa App to link your Appkettle account by entering your Appkettle account details and then select "discover devices".

(4) After discovery of new devices your Appkettle device name should now be listed. Now it is time to use voice actions with Alexa to turn on your Appkettle! You can do this by using the following example phrases:

->> "Alexa, turn on [say your device name]"
- e.g. Alexa turn on 'Kettle'.

->> "Alexa, turn off [say your device name]"
- e.g. Alexa turn off 'Kettle'.

(5) If you have correctly setup your Appkettle skill, Alexa will say "Ok" after each voice skill request. Skill setup complete.

[Appkettle skill - Limitations]

1. Alexa is currently 1-way directional in voice feedback and so heating complete notifications can not be currently added to our Appkettle Skill. It is expected that there will be an update to Alexa later this year that will allow 2-way voice feedback with Alexa.

2. This Appkettle skill requires at least 250ml of water in Appkettle to work, it’s good user practice to refill Appkettle after use, ready for next time.

3. This Appkettle skill currently allows heating to boiling and turning off only, this is our first Appkettle skill and it’s our foundation to enable future skills to be added into Appkettle in late 2017.

[Troubleshooting & FAQ's]

1. Appkettle Name Updates - Don’t Forget to Refresh the Alexa App

If you change Appkettle’s name in the Appkettle App don’t forget to refresh the device list in the Alexa App smart home section. Otherwise Alexa will not be up-to date with your Appkettle’s latest name and the Appkettle skill will not work.

2. Alexa Is Not Responding With Your Appkettle Device Name

Please ensure that you have selected an Appkettle device name that is easy to say and recognise and it is an actual word. Next please check that your device is shown in the Alexa Devices list.

3. Alexa skill is not working reliably / Intermittent / Other issues:

Please check your Appkettle is connected to your 2.4GHz WiFi network using a separate name and your WIFi Network is connected to the internet. Then please check that your Alexa skill app is linked to your WiFi and the Appkettle app. Next check that the Alexa App has correctly discovered your Appkettle device and you have given the device an easy name to pronounce. Finally try a quick reset of the skill by completing the following actions:
i. Disable skill
ii. Forget devices
iii. Enable and link skill again
iv. Re-discover devices
v. Check your device is shown
vi. Check the skill is enabled
vii. Test Skill

For more information please see the 'Troubleshooting & FAQ's' at https://www.myappkettle.com/alexa.

Thank you and we hope you enjoy this Appkettle skill.
